Introduction

The Gujarat Livestock Development Board - Gandhinagar was established by Government of Gujarat on 12th April 2002 and was registered under Charity Commissioner act and Co-operative Society act on 31st March 2003.

Gujarat Livestock Development Board - Gandhinagar has been appointed as a State Implementing Agency (SIA) for the implementation of National Project for Cattle and Buffalo Breeding (NPCBB) – a 100% centrally sponsored scheme, and now the NPBB (National Project for Bovine Breeding).

Objectives:

  • To cover optimum bovine population of the state through Artificial Insemination under organized breeding.
  • To provide breeding at the door step of the farmer.
  • To establish and enforce established norms for the production of Frozen Semen Doses (FSDs) and Laboratory process.
  • To conserve and propagate pure breed indigenous breeds of Gir ad Kankrej cattle and Mehsani, Surati, Jafarabadi and Banni buffalo.
  • To impart training to all Artificial Insemination workers and professionals.
  • To bring all the breeding agencies of the state under single umbrella.

Scope of work:

  • Gujarat Livestock Development Board - Gandhinagar is primarily an institute related to the breeding of bovines i.e. cattle and buffalo.
  • Privet Artificial Insemination centers are being established by GLDB in the remote and hinterland areas of the state having least or absence of the breeding infrastructure.
  • Necessary infrastructure required for Artificial Insemination has been established in the state. For that semen banks in Saurashtra, North Gujarat, Central Gujarat and South Gujarat regions of the state for transportation, storage and distribution of Liquid Nitrogen and semen doses have been established.
  • To cater to the need of high quality Frozen Semen Doses (FSDs) produced from the semen of High Genetic Merit bulls (HGM bulls) required for Artificial Insemination, a state of the art State Frozen Semen Production and Training Institute - Patan has been established at Patan.
  • Refresher training is imparted to Artificial Insemination workers, Livestock Inspectors and Veterinary Officers at State Frozen Semen Production and Training Institute - Patan and Technical Training Institute – Morbi to improve the quality of Artificial Insemination services and thereby to improve conception rate.
  • Fertility Improvement camps are organized to treat the infertility in the breedable bovine population of the state.
  • To conserve and to propagate the indigenous cattle and buffalo breeds of the state, Cattle Breeding Farms have been established in various agro-climatic areas of the state. Which are maintained by Gujarat Livestock Development Board.

Infrastructural facilities:

  • The head office of Gujarat Livestock Development Board – Gandhinagar is situated at Krishibhavan, Sector 10A, Gandhinagar.
  • A state of the art Frozen Semen Doses production facility have been established at State Frozen Semen Production and Training Institute – Patan, where bulls of various indigenous breeds of our state like Gir and Kankrej cattle, Mehsani, Surati, Jafarabadi and Banni buffalo and HF and Jersey crossbreed and purebred are maintained.
  • Five semen banks have been established at Mehsana, Himmatnagar, Vadodara, Haripura – Surat and Rajkot for the distribution of Semen doses. A total of 27 Liquid Nitrogen silos have been established in the state of which 12 silos are directly under the control of GLDB whereas 15 LN2 silos have been installed at various District Co-operative Milk Producer Unions.
  • Technical training center – Morbi and Training center at State Frozen Semen Production and Training Institute - Patan are established for the purpose of technical training.
  • Cattle Breeding Farms at Bhuj (Kankrej cattle and Banni buffalo), Bhutvad (Gir cattle), Thara (Kankrej cattle), Mandavi – Tapi (Kankrej cattle and Mehsani buffalo) are working for the conservation and propagation of local breeds of the state.

The finances of the board are provided under Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS), jointly sponsored schemes by Planning commission and State Government and State Government sponsored schemes. The schemes implemented by board are as under:

Gujarat Livestock Development Board - Gandhinagar was established as State Implementing Agency for the implementation of 100% Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National Project for Cattle and Buffalo Breeding (NPCBB). The first phase of NPCBB from the year 2003–04 to 2007–08 saw the fund utilization of Rs. 1122.95 lakhs against the allocation of Rs. 1122.95 lakhs, whereas the second phase from 2009-10 to 2013-14 saw the fund utilization of Rs. 2661.33 lakhs against the allocation of Rs. 3400.00 lakhs.

Activities of Gujarat Livestock Development Board - Gandhinagar

  • Gopalmitra centers were established in remote and hinterland areas of the state under NPCBB to avail the facility of Artificial Insemination services.
  • Now under NPBB the centers will be established as MAITRI (Multipurpose AI Technician in Rural India).

  • GLDB distributed 8,18,633 ltrs. of liquid Nitrogen in the year 2014-15.
  • The state of the art laboratory at State Frozen Semen Production and Training Institute - Patan houses 60 Bulls and has produced 18,04,795 number of Frozen Semen Doses in the year 2014-15.

With the sole objective of carrying out breeding activity for breed improvement of milch breeds of the state, Gujarat Livestock Development Board was established on 12th April 2002 and was registered under Charity Commissioner Act on 31st March 2003.

Gujarat Livestock Development Board (GLDB) has been nominated as State Implementing Agency (SIA) for NPCBB (National Project for Cattle and Buffalo Breeding), a 100% centrally sponsored scheme.

Gujarat Livestock Development Board works as per the Activity components of NPCBB. Accordingly it produces Frozen Semen Doses of High Genetic Merit bulls (HGM bulls), its distribution, the infrastructure needed for distribution of FSDs like: LN2 Storage Tank and vehicles meant for LN2 storage and distribution, the infrastructure for Artificial Insemination like: selection of AI workers at village level, their training, distribution of AI kits and regular supply of FSDs, LN2 and consumables, programmes for production of HGM bulls, selection of HGM bulls, their testing for STDs etc.

In accordance to these activities GLDB operates State Frozen Semen Production and Training Institute – Patan, training centers at FSS – Patan and Morabi, Semen banks at Mehsana, Himmatnagar, Vadodara, Haripura, Rajkot, Junagadh and Bhuj and 684 Gopalmitra centers in various districts of the state. Moreover GLDB operates Cattle Breeding Farms at Bhuj, Bhutvad, Thara and Mandvi , originally transferred by Dept. of Animal Husbandry.
